The trophy, depicting the clubhouse at Augusta, was introduced in 1961. It was made in England and consists of over 900 individual pieces of silver. We’d make do with the green jacket though (doesn’t need polishing). The winner takes away a silver replica of the trophy, the jacket, a gold medal – oh and a bit of dosh. But they don’t get to keep the jacket. They’re allowed to take it away the first year, then it has to be kept at the club with ex-winners allowed to wear them during tournie week.US Masters Trophy

One exception to this was Gary Player, winner in 1961, who failed to return his green jacket despite the club insisting that he did.Gary Player

Who said “What a stupid I am!” after signing his last round card for a shot higher than his actual score, and thereby missing out on a play off for the title? – Roberto de Vicenzo in 1968. Bad day at the office that day. What a gent though – “but I congratulate Bob Goalby, he gave me so much pressure that I lost my brain.”Roberto de Vicenzo

In the whole history of the Masters, no sudden death play-off has ever lasted more than two holes.

Despite having won SIX Masters, Jack Nicklaus has only ever been awarded one jacket. The rule is, just one unless the player’s size changes dramatically. We seem to remember young Jack’s weight yo-yoing a bit in his time…Jack Nicklaus and his jacket

Some words from players on pressure, choking, the way of Augusta and one portion of sour grapes;

“If it weren’t for the greens, this course would be nothing.” Steve Scott, US amateur after scoring 79 to miss the cut.

Since 1952 there’s been a Champions’ Dinner on the Tuesday night before the start of the tournament. The previous year’s winner picks the menu – with Sandy Lyle force feeding everyone haggis in 1989.Haggis & Mash

This year –

Gary Player will play for a remarkable 51st time, a new record. He’s only missed playing once since 1957.
There’s no British amateur playing this year. The winner of the title was an American. The winner of the USA Amateur has turned pro in the meantime too, so doesn’t get an automatic invite.
Changes to the course this year; first tee enlarged at front by ten yards in case the tee has to go forward in a strong wind (softies), seventh green enlarged to left, ninth green made a bit easier, eleventh has had some trees removed (where Tiger broke a club last year).The Green Jacket
