The Hedgehogs are coming…

We’ve teamed up with the Hedgehog golf company, and will soon have replacement wheel sets available for the GoKart trolley.

We’ve found lately that many clubs are now allowing electric golf trolleys on the course in the winter as long as their wheels are suitably attired (there’s a pun in there somewhere). Fortunately the clever Hedgehog people have developed a range of replacement wheels kits incorportating their patented rubber studs.

They have made these to fit the GoKart too, which will be available exclusively from us. The kit includes all three wheels, including the non-driving front wheel. This is important because increasingly clubs are saying the front wheel has to be hogged as well as the driving wheels. According to the experts, the compaction of the wet soil by flat wheels is a problem, as well as wheel spin tearing off the top layer of soil. These wheels should solve both the issues.

We’re expecting our first delivery around mid December, with further supplies available after the New Year. The price for the kit will be £61 plus post and packing. Availability will be limited to begin with, so if you’d like to reserve a set please let us know sharpish; please click here to send us a message.

  1. We do have to use either Hedgehogs or Powakaddy winter wheels on our course. The Powakaddy wheels are 100 times better than hedgehogs for sure. Hedgehogs work ok on the grass, but down the paths they make your cart bounce all over the place. Powakaddy wheels are smoother on grass and paths. I have 8 mates with Go Carts who all want to see a wheel like the powakaddy winter wheel.

  2. Simon,
It’s surprising to hear you find the Hedgehog wheels a problem on paths. The studs in the hedgehog tyres are quite soft; they look fairly gruesome but we find they actually cushion the ride on hard ground.

  3. Are these complete new set of wheels or just the outer hedgehog outers that are fitted on to the original wheels
    Many thanks

  6. Our golf club has banned all but Powercaddy winter wheels in wet weather – Hedgehog wheels are not allowed on course.
Have you any comments on this?
Have you any evidence to refute the implication that Powercaddy wheels are less harmful than Hedgehogs?

  7. Irving,
The situation is very fluid. It wasn’t long ago most courses banned electric golf trolleys in wet conditions. Each club makes their own rules, but we hope a concensus forms soon, because it is confusing at the moment. We don’t believe Hedgehog wheels cause any damage. They certainly don’t compact the soil, which is one of the reasons cited for not using flat tyred wheels. Some clubs have said that the Hedgehog studs can tear the ground up when fitted to an electric trolley. In practise this doesn’t happen in normal use when they’re fitted on the GoKart. Despite what they look like, the Hedgehog studs are quite soft, and it takes a determined act of vandalism to make the wheels spin and leave an impression in the grass.

I have a set for my old ‘manual’ trolley and they are ever bit as good as the company claim, unusual in this day and age. So, please, put me down for a set for my GoKart ‘cos I really don’t fancy pushing and pulling in the wet and the cold.
    Cheers
    Dave
PS Can someone make sure that the clubs are as clued up as we are.

  9. Could you please reserve me a set of Hedgehog Wheels for my Go Kart trolley and advise me when they come in so that I can then contact you to make payment

  10. Can you tell me please if these are complete wheels ? I already have hedgehog slip overs that are put on my existing wheels, but they have to have a lot of cable ties to stop them slipping and also having had them for 2/3 years they are beginning to split, so are looking to replace them.
So it may be worth getting new hodgehog wheels if that is what you will be supplying and keeping my original wheels to put on in the summer.
Thank you for any help you can give.

  11. Rosemary,
Yes, they are complete wheels and not just the covers that until recently have been the only option. We’ll let you know as soon as we have them in stock.

  12. £61 seems expensive as you can have a set of Hedgehogs fitted at my club for £25. I know that you and Hedgehog have R+D costs, but I have had my Go Kart now for 18 months and went all last winter with fitted Hedgehogs, took them off in the Spring and have just re-fitted them, all for £25, so I can’t see you selling many at £61. Your survey tells you that nearly 40% of customers would buy them, maybe this needs factoring into your costings.
I love my Go Kart and hope that you find my critiicism constructive. on a lighter note, I played in a 4 ball last Saturday and we all had Go Karts, all a different colour!

  13. Hi
MY CLUB INSISTS ON THIS TYPE OF WHEEL FROM 1ST NOVEMEBER IRRESPECTIV E OF THE WEATHER.Uunfortunately IT IS POSSIBLE TO BUY HEDGEHOG STRAPS WHICH CAN BE FITTED TO THE REAR TYRES BY SUITABLE PLASTIC STRAPS. NOT VERY ELEGANT BUT DOES THE JOB.TOTAL COST £ 20.. uSED BY MOST AT MY CLUB ON GOKARTS.FRONT WHEEL IS NOT REQUIRED BUT MAY BE A BENEFIT.
TRY SELLING WHEELS SEPARATELY IE FRONT OR REAR OTHER WISE SORRY.

  14. I had a spare set of wheels, with loose tyres, which you kindly replaced FOC, Last winter I decided to fit hedgehogs permanently to these wheels, so that I could fit them to the trolley when necessary. My course (Lingfield Park) resisted initially (“We can’t make an exception just for you”!), but eventually agreed that I could use the trolley all year round. I proved that no damage whatsoever was done to the course, even without a hedgehog on the front wheel.
The only problem I had was that the trolley was unstable on hard surfaces, and on slopes, so I had to park it carefully. The 36 hole battery held out perfectly.
I had previously tried this out with a Hillbilly, but the 18 hole battery ran out before the end of the round, and I have not tried an 18 hole battery with the GoKart.
I reinforced the fitting with self tapping stainless steel screws at regular intervals round the wheel.

  15. £61??
Anyone else think this is a bit steep?
Guess there’s no chance of this price coming down?…

  16. Will I still be able to use the seat with these hedgehogs? Just about everyone is greatly impressed by the seat and of course the GoKart

  17. Frank,
Unfortunately no. You’ve found the one disadvantage of the Hedgehog wheels; you have to stand up. Sorry.

  18. how much!!! guys i love golf, am crap but i love it all the same, but being a mere mortal i would never never pay that much for 3 plastik wheels.
would tell you to put them where the sun dont shine but think it would hurt a bit. ps love my go kart x

  19. Unfortunately our club only allows the Powerkaddy winter wheel (open mesh type).
This is after testing exhaustively by our head of greens committee .(David) at MoorAllerton GC in Leeds.
The other Hedgehog wheel tends to either spin or chew up the mud.
If I ask nicely could you adapt the PoweKaddy type wheel to the GoKart.
    Thanks
Paul (and lots of other GoKart users at MAGC)

  20. Come on lads, yes its another tight git from up north £61, you’re having a laugh. We all know you can buy the nobbley bits off ebay for less than £20. Do you have any intention of selling the front wheel/cover only. Cheers

  21. SC,
There is quite a lot more too a complete set of three wheels, compared to a pair of covers. I’m afraid £61 is the best price we can offer.

  22. Hi,
Glad to hear you will be introducing hedgehog wheels. My club is just about to start their introduction this winter. When I found out that I would not be able to use my Go-Kart if I did NOT have hedgehog wheels during the winter I thought that having spent £249 on a new trolley a couple of months ago had been a waste of money.
However I do feel they are a bit steep at £61 a pair. The Powercaddy wheels at my pro shop are only in the £50’s a pair for replacement wheels and they have hedgehog over tyres in stock for hand propelled trolleys ? Some time ago the makers of hedgehog wheels made hedgehog tyres to fit over the existing trolley wheels. Why cant we have that type for our Go-karts ?

  23. Brian,
The recommended price for the PK wheels is £69.95 a pair. The best price we could find online was £49.95. This is for the two driving wheels. As the Hedgehog kit includes all three wheels, we feel they are comparable in price. The Hedgehog covers that fit over the driving wheels are still available. These are strictly designed for use on pull carts, but we have used them on the GoKart, and they work well, as long as they are securely attached using cable ties.

  24. I have had a gokart for a number of months now and on the whole have been very pleased with performance. The wheels though are a problem. First i think they are a little too big (diameter and width) which negates the easy storage in the boot, and secondly although easy to clip on i find them difficult to clip off, the problem being trying to squeeze the plastic clips together at the same time as sliding the wheel off. Perhaps you would like to consider these points when reviewing you next design improvements.

  25. I fitted the loose hedgehog sleeves last winter, fastened with cable ties as recommended. By the end of the winter (approx 250 holes of golf) some of the lugs had torn out and the hedgehogs had to be discarded. I have friends with other electric trolleys who leave their hedgehogs permanently fitted and have not had this problem.
I will try the sleeves again this winter and see what happens.

  26. our course gets quite muddy at this time of year, causing a big build up of mud etc.around the front drive wheel & side frame areas [some times needs unblocking during the round] any thoughts on a removable scraper /brush attachment ? may be something that could be fitted to the two side frames .PS the GO CART is a big hit with the senior section here at Stevenage Golf Club

  27. Michael,
We do know that mud can build up around the front wheel of the GoKart, but you should find that it won’t actually stop the wheel turning. The mud will collect up to a certain point and then fall away as the wheel continues to turn.
It’s very difficuly to design a front wheel arrangement in such a way that mud won’t get collected under some conditions. With the GoKart, we made it so that the wheel is open and therefore mud can’t get trapped and prevent the wheel turning.
It may look a bit messy at this time of year, but you should be OK all the time the wheel continues to turn.

  28. Please would you reserve a set of Hedgehogs for me and inform me of when they are available.
    Thank You.
    Derek

  29. My “Golf To” Go Kart arrived this morning, charged and in time for my Winter League 9 hole comp.
No problems so far, except with the assembly, but then I failed to follow the simple instructions!
Despite the wet underfoot conditions, the Kart performed well.
Easy to dismantle and carry. Congrats.
Congrats too on the prompt delivery and the Oh sooooo friendly, patient polite, advisors at the end of the telephone.
Looking forward to my next 9 holes.
Will keep you informed re the Kart’s performance.
    Yours in golf. M B.
    PS What are hedgehog wheels?

  30. I can’t wait, I have a set of hedgehogs for my pull trolley and leave them on all year because the trolley is so much lighter for me to pull. An electric trolley is on my Christmas list this year so I will make sure they have the hedgehog wheels.
£61 will make hubby think he’s got off lightly!!!

  31. PLEASE RESERVE ME A SET OF WHEELS WHEN SHIPMENT IS IN AND IF POSSIBLE EMAIL ME FOR PAYMENT MANY THANKS PAUL

  32. Please reserve a set Hedgehogs for mefor deliver asap. Many thanks.
I have had to swear my Gokart to silence re this new treat, as my wife’s kart listens in to every titbit ot conversation and can become very restless and jealous!
Reference to comment Nigel #34: I have had exactly the same problem, a massive deteration of the lugs within a few months, as if from a faulty material compound. My wife’s set of hedgehogs, one year older are still in terrific condition (wouldn’t you know it!)
I was kindly sent one replacement strap by Jane at Hedgehogs, but never fitted it, as by the time it arrived the second had joined the first in a form of spike moulting. I hope similar problems don’t afflict the new wheel sets.

  33. Hi Margaret, glad you’re enjoying the trolley! Hedgehog wheels are special winter wheels with big knobbly bits that look a bit odd but are a lot kinder to wet fairways than standard trolley wheels. A lot of clubs insist on them being used in winter. We’ll have ours ready very soon. You may not need them at your club, but just be careful if you’re involved in away matches and so on. Once you get used to your GoKart you won’t want to be without it!

  34. Please can we get some Powakaddy style PROPER winter wheels. I have come across two or three clubs where they are the only allowed form of winter wheel, and they are so much better than hedgehogs which always lose their spikes after a couple of months of heavy use…
    Thanks.

  35. Hi Nick, we think you’ll find that the new hedgehogs, designed for use on the GoKart not a manual trolley, will stand up to heavy use extremely well. We know the technology is proven too.

  36. Having just read the emails I see you have answered my question, having purchased a seat and found it to be invaluable, i find it strange that you should offer any addition that negates an accessory designed by yourselves? Roy
