Life with hedgehogs (not a natural history programme);

Just to explain, hedgehogs are being tested on this trolley, and feedback from the owner may be useful to other GoKartees:

“New wheels arrived – thank you very much – and so did the Hedgehog tyres.
The tyres are a VERY tight fit over the GoKart wheels, but I worked out that a “smear” of neat Fairy Liquid round the insides of the tyres made them much easier to push on. You were quite correct. The clips supplied with the Hedgehog tyres are worse than useless on your wheels – so they went in the bin.
You need 10 X cable ties about 240mm long to secure the tyres to your wheels, and I discovered that Maplin sell a pack of 20 silver cable ties which are plenty long enough and look very smart(ish). They are £2.50 a pack, and are designed for securing wheel trims on cars – but do the job a treat.
To be honest, the tyres fit on the wheels so tightly I think they would probably stay on without clips or ties, but better safe than sorry.
I have now had two rounds with the new “boots” fitted and they are FANTASTIC. There is absolutely no loss of traction, or “side-slip” on wet hills – they just frolic up anything. The cart actually feels to run over the ground more smoothly than it does on the standard wheels – maybe the rubber “prongs” act like sort of suspension springs. Anyway, so far there is no problem whatsoever – there seems to be no strain on the motor, and lots of people have commented how good they are.”

  1. Following some helpful tips from the guys at GoKart I fitted the Hedgehogs and have to agree with all that has been said above.
    I would add though that if too few cable ties are used the hedgehog will slip sideways on the wheel if traversing a cross hill slope. I have found that one tie between each spoke works perfectly.
    In truly muddy conditions they will pick up some mud but a blast with hose cleans them off a treat. Big tip – stand well back whilst doing this as the water goes everywhere!

  2. Ditto all the above. Fitted my Hedgehogs last week with about 5 cable ties per wheel, and have played 2 full rounds with them on, what can I say? …………….. Brilliant! but they do make some funny noises when running through very wet grass and shallow puddles! Cornering on hard surfaces can be fun. (sort of like a car with a flat tyre probably best decribes it!), but this really is a minimal thing. I fully intend to leave them on all year round.

  3. Can I buy hedgehog tyres from you ?
    last week, I couldn’t use my new Go-kart because trolleys without hedgehog wheels were not allowed
